FX chief: scripted originals set to top 520 in 2018
Landgraf , who coined the term "peak TV," tells the hollywood reporter. "with 487, you only have to increase 2.7 percent off this year's total to hit 500. It seems like it's more likely that you're going to get to 520."
To his point, netflix is expected to spend another $8 billion on scripted originals in 2018, while amazon — which is paying $250 million for global rights for a lord of the rings TV series — is forecast to spend more than $4.5 billion. Hulu , the first streamer to win a best drama emmy (for the handmaid's tale), will spend $2.5 billion on originals this year.
"virtually all the growth is and will be coming out of streaming services," landgraf says. "everybody is going to try to maintain their investment posture as much as they can, but the traditional channels and brands are being held to a different standard of accountability than the streamers in terms of the cost of and return on capital."
And then there's apple, entering the scripted space with a $1 billion budget. For its first series, a morning-show drama, it's said to be paying $1 million an episode to stars jennifer aniston and reese witherspoon. The tech giant's slate also includes an amazing stories reboot and a space drama from battlestar galactica's ron moore.
Meanwhile, landgraf believes broadcast and basic and premium cable are either at or near their peak. For the second year in a row, basic cable saw fewer new series (from 183 to 175 in 2017) as outlets like WGN america and A&E exited the scripted space. Broadcast and premium content have grown modestly over the past four years, with the former clocking in at 153 originals in 2017, up from 146, and the latter 42, up from 36.
And for every platform that leaves the scripted business, a new one — like facebook — enters it as landgraf says the total number of brands producing originals continues to hover around 77.

Months after shutting down the short-lived FX+, the new disney-fied FX is re-entering the streaming era. Kind of.
Beginning march 2, “FX on hulu” becomes the “official” streaming home for FX shows — including all seasons of past FX shows and new original series produced by FX specifically for the streaming platform. Episodes of current FX series will be made available to stream on hulu the day after they air on the linear network.

The first two shows that FX will be producing , the alex garland sci-fi series “devs” and cate blanchett’s “mrs. America,” will debut in march and april, respectively. Two more — “the old man” and “A teacher” — will air later this year.
Thewrap caught up with FX networks CEO john landgraf during the television critics association press tour, where he spoke about how the FX on hulu partnership gives them additional development shelf space and how the streaming boom could look after three more big launches in 2020.
The following interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.
With the FX on hulu strategy, are you worried that the FX brand will get muddled?
I think that was one of the reasons that we — and I’m really grateful that my colleagues at hulu, walt disney television and direct-to-consumer supported this decision collectively when we came to it — that we decided we had to put all the FX linear shows on hulu, so they were all in one place. There’s two shows we can’t do that with, which are “pose” and “american crime story.” but other than that, everything is together.
I didn’t want this bifurcated experience. Is it conceivable that we could eventually go in both directions and have some hulu shows end up finding their way on FX? Yea, that’s conceivable. It’s not my unilateral decision at all. It’s more hulu’s decision in some ways than mine.
I want to get the brand together as much as I can.
Do you see a world where FX is viewed more as a studio vs a traditional TV network?
I don’t. Ultimately, FX started as a channel and it became a brand. The way that FX and HBO became brands is they were a channel, plus a network, plus a studio, plus all of the marketing associated with it. I’ve been saying for a long time we had to become a multi-platform brand. We had to be more than a channel. And so, we’ve really leaned into the idea of being a brand. Now, we have something that can transcend the channel on which it was developed.
Ultimately, we have to prove that it’s useful to hulu and that it’s useful to disney. But, I can tell you that disney’s vision and hulu’s vision and bob iger’s vision is that he wants great platforms and great brands. And he wants those two things to each co-exist and thrive.
Why were those four shows the ones selected to move to hulu?
We had a half-dozen series — actually more, because we have a bunch of a docuseries. We were really fortunate that we have a really stable schedule at FX. Not only could we take most of that schedule and make it available to hulu, but we could take most of our development for this year, and we had the capacity to start this new initiative. We’re adding “breeders” and “dave.” we always said we wanted to keep adding shows to FX, and “breeders” replaces “baskets.” but that was the only show we had to replace. In the future, when FX shows are finished we’ll replace them.
Going forward, how will you decide what goes to FX, FXX and FX on hulu?
With FXX, you have younger skewing shows tend to go there, like “cake” or “dave,” vs “what we do in the shadows” or “better things” [on FX]. As far as what of the FX brand will work best on FX on hulu? I don’t know. I’m hopeful that the FX brand as a whole will work really well on hulu, but there may well be some components that work better than others. I have a lot to learn about which components from what we do from a brand standpoint are most useful to hulu. How that works and their input will be really valuable. I look at FX on hulu as part of a singular unified brand.
Do you have an idea as to how much you guys will produce annually for FX on hulu?
Yea. We have some early targets. I have a sense of what it’s supposed to be next year and the year after.
Is it going to grow from the four this year?
It is envisioned to continue to grow. A very substantial portion of what hulu spends on original programming has been, and will continue to be, hulu originals. We’re not replacing them. But what’s great is that we’re able to bring a lot of the really great linear shows over; it now becomes a brand of comparable weight. Not because we have many exclusives, but because we have all of it in one place.
Disney and apple launched their streaming services in november. There are three more to come to this spring with quibi, peacock and HBO max. What will we be saying about streaming at the end of 2020?
I wish I knew. I could make a lot of money if I knew the answer to that question.
It’s a lot of major investment in streaming services. Even if we don’t include pluto or something like that, you just described 8 streaming services [including hulu, netflix and amazon]. That’s a lot of programming. Probably they won’t all work. Probably some of them will. I think it’s going to be an overwhelming amount of content for the consumer. I think it’s arguably more content than the consumer needs. You could produce more content than the consumer needs for quite a long period of time. But eventually, there will be some rationalization between what the consumer can actually watch and consume and what’s being made.
FX chief: "HBO and FX absolutely dominated the race for quality in television"
Landgraf on development: "I really believe in the development process. Obviously, ted [sarandos]'s organization has a different point of view. There's a process of working on a script and working on a pilot -- sometimes actually retooling a pilot -- that's valuable for precision of tone. And it's difficult to do that right now because [with] any project that has merit, there is, at minimum, a pilot commitment and often a series commitment."
With apologies to netflix and showtime, this is a two-network race.
That was FX networks CEO john landgraf's bold message sunday as he took the stage for the semiannual gathering of the television critics association. After praising the network's robust slate of shows and its 2014 nielsen standing — FX rounded out the year the no. 4 network on cable, with four of the top 10 rated cable series — the famously erudite network chief showcased a pair of powerpoint slides that broke down the networks by the number of critics’ top 10 lists their programming appeared on in 2014. HBO topped that list at 250 mentions, with FX ranking second with a similarly impressive 213, thanks to a growing cadre of shows that include the americans, fargo, louie and justified. The point he was looking to make not with superlatives but with data: the rest, including AMC, netflix and showtime, ranked well behind with 74, 67 and 62 mentions, respectively.
“HBO and FX absolutely dominated the race for quality in television, and this shows at the moment that the race for the best in TV is really only a competition between two channels, with all the others way, way behind the two leaders,” he said as a roomful of reporters took in the slides. He went on to note that while a single show like fargo, true detective, mad men, transparent or orange is the new black can account for a lot of inclusions, it requires several shows of that caliber to get to the level that HBO and FX achieved last year.
“I would submit if FX was previously considered a part of a group of channels battling it out for second place in the perceptual pecking order,the factual pecking order is now that HBO and FX are no. 1 and no. 2, and everyone else in a pack battling it out for no. 3,” he said, throwing down the proverbial gauntlet, before adding: “and that’s not a swipe at everyone else because I truly respect our very good and formidable competitors and the many, many excellent TV shows that are not on HBO or FX, it’s just the reality that FX has broken well out of that pack and demonstrably strengthened its position and it, and only it, is now closing in on HBO.”
Here are the other highlights from landgraf's half hour before the press.
If it remains as creatively strong as it is now, landgraf expects the americans will run at least five seasons. What would help solidify the latter, however, would be stronger ratings and awards attention to match the series’ unanimous critical praise. “I sure would like the emmys to step up and take notice, and I think that would be really helpful for the show,” he said from the stage, noting that the russian spy drama's forthcoming third season is the best yet. And while the ratings are a perennial disappointment, landgraf reiterated that the series does lift the network’s creative standing: “we’re not really a channel that’s trying to be the highest-rated channel on television," he added. "we’re trying as hard as we possibly can to be the best channel on television.”
The bridge’s demise
Landgraf acknowledged that he does have regrets about pulling the plug after the second season of the border drama, but the ratings were such that he had no choice. “it was a relentless downward trajectory,” he said, adding that while he can ignore ratings for a long time, if a series is still falling after 26 episodes he has to reconsider the space it’s taking up on the schedule. There were other challenges, too, with landgraf acknowledging that this was the first time the network had done a show based on a format and the series struggled to replicate the original iteration’s marriage of a border storyline with a serial killer one early on.
Louis C.K.’s reign
Louis C.K. Is to FX what larry david is to HBO. Which is to say if he says he wants to do eight episodes of louie, eight episodes he will do. And the decision to do more will be in his hands as well, but landgraf noted that his star does want to keep making the show after the forthcoming season, which bows in april. At this stage, it will just be a matter of when, with landgraf acknowledging C.K. Was “burned out" by the intense process, which includes writing, producing, directing, editing and starring, on top of everything else he has going on. "we're just trying to give him as much flexibility as we can," said the network chief. In the interim, FX announced sunday that it’ll air a C.K. A question about the rebirth of the anthology format, for which FX has achieved success with fargo and american horror story, prompted a discussion about the evolution of storytelling. Landgraf credited david chase and the sopranos with birthing the shorter-season, serialized cable drama movement, which was born out of a desire to break out of the medium’s 22 episode, procedural drama box. But as the cable landscape exploded with myriad iterations of the former, that format of seven seasons, 91 hours of serialized fare began to feel like a form of handcuffs as well. The FX boss argued that the anthology format is the latest means of breaking free, with the length of the show being dictated by the optimal length of the story, and not the other way around. To that end, landgraf added: “fargo was pretty great at 10 hours, and it wouldn’t have been if you tried to spread it out to 30 or 50, or tried to compress it down to two.”

Months after shutting down the short-lived FX+, the new disney-fied FX is re-entering the streaming era. Kind of.
Beginning march 2, “FX on hulu” becomes the “official” streaming home for FX shows — including all seasons of past FX shows and new original series produced by FX specifically for the streaming platform. Episodes of current FX series will be made available to stream on hulu the day after they air on the linear network.

The first two shows that FX will be producing , the alex garland sci-fi series “devs” and cate blanchett’s “mrs. America,” will debut in march and april, respectively. Two more — “the old man” and “A teacher” — will air later this year.
Thewrap caught up with FX networks CEO john landgraf during the television critics association press tour, where he spoke about how the FX on hulu partnership gives them additional development shelf space and how the streaming boom could look after three more big launches in 2020.
The following interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.
With the FX on hulu strategy, are you worried that the FX brand will get muddled?
I think that was one of the reasons that we — and I’m really grateful that my colleagues at hulu, walt disney television and direct-to-consumer supported this decision collectively when we came to it — that we decided we had to put all the FX linear shows on hulu, so they were all in one place. There’s two shows we can’t do that with, which are “pose” and “american crime story.” but other than that, everything is together.
I didn’t want this bifurcated experience. Is it conceivable that we could eventually go in both directions and have some hulu shows end up finding their way on FX? Yea, that’s conceivable. It’s not my unilateral decision at all. It’s more hulu’s decision in some ways than mine.
I want to get the brand together as much as I can.
Do you see a world where FX is viewed more as a studio vs a traditional TV network?
I don’t. Ultimately, FX started as a channel and it became a brand. The way that FX and HBO became brands is they were a channel, plus a network, plus a studio, plus all of the marketing associated with it. I’ve been saying for a long time we had to become a multi-platform brand. We had to be more than a channel. And so, we’ve really leaned into the idea of being a brand. Now, we have something that can transcend the channel on which it was developed.
Ultimately, we have to prove that it’s useful to hulu and that it’s useful to disney. But, I can tell you that disney’s vision and hulu’s vision and bob iger’s vision is that he wants great platforms and great brands. And he wants those two things to each co-exist and thrive.
Why were those four shows the ones selected to move to hulu?
We had a half-dozen series — actually more, because we have a bunch of a docuseries. We were really fortunate that we have a really stable schedule at FX. Not only could we take most of that schedule and make it available to hulu, but we could take most of our development for this year, and we had the capacity to start this new initiative. We’re adding “breeders” and “dave.” we always said we wanted to keep adding shows to FX, and “breeders” replaces “baskets.” but that was the only show we had to replace. In the future, when FX shows are finished we’ll replace them.
Going forward, how will you decide what goes to FX, FXX and FX on hulu?
With FXX, you have younger skewing shows tend to go there, like “cake” or “dave,” vs “what we do in the shadows” or “better things” [on FX]. As far as what of the FX brand will work best on FX on hulu? I don’t know. I’m hopeful that the FX brand as a whole will work really well on hulu, but there may well be some components that work better than others. I have a lot to learn about which components from what we do from a brand standpoint are most useful to hulu. How that works and their input will be really valuable. I look at FX on hulu as part of a singular unified brand.
Do you have an idea as to how much you guys will produce annually for FX on hulu?
Yea. We have some early targets. I have a sense of what it’s supposed to be next year and the year after.
Is it going to grow from the four this year?
It is envisioned to continue to grow. A very substantial portion of what hulu spends on original programming has been, and will continue to be, hulu originals. We’re not replacing them. But what’s great is that we’re able to bring a lot of the really great linear shows over; it now becomes a brand of comparable weight. Not because we have many exclusives, but because we have all of it in one place.
Disney and apple launched their streaming services in november. There are three more to come to this spring with quibi, peacock and HBO max. What will we be saying about streaming at the end of 2020?
I wish I knew. I could make a lot of money if I knew the answer to that question.
It’s a lot of major investment in streaming services. Even if we don’t include pluto or something like that, you just described 8 streaming services [including hulu, netflix and amazon]. That’s a lot of programming. Probably they won’t all work. Probably some of them will. I think it’s going to be an overwhelming amount of content for the consumer. I think it’s arguably more content than the consumer needs. You could produce more content than the consumer needs for quite a long period of time. But eventually, there will be some rationalization between what the consumer can actually watch and consume and what’s being made.
