Real money trading in games: a cryptocurrency solution
@ lordmancerlordmancer II
Real money trading has a long history in the game industry, and has been historically banned or discouraged by most western game developers and publishers, especially in the case of mmorpgs. Coincidentally, mmorpgs are also the games in which real money trading and markets are in highest demand by users, due to the way that resource and item scarcity gate progress.
Below are a few examples of trading and market implementations in real games.
Team fortress 2 and DOTA 2
These games contain “cosmetic item markets” (steam workshop) where you can exchange or sell your goods to another player for real dollars. This is condoned and encouraged by valve, and they created a backend and framework to support this type of exchange.
Valve has disclosed that over 90% of the items in TF2 were actually created by players. Users can submit models and textures to be voted on by the community, and those with high enough ratings are sold in the TF2 store. Creators a cut of the profits.
There is no publically available data concerning turnover in the cosmetic item market in DOTA 2, but in 2015 total monthly revenue of the game exceeded $18 million USD.
Second life
Second life is an online virtual world. While not a traditional MMOG, second life fosters interaction between players and with the world by simulating as much of the real world as possible in a virtual space. Linden labs, the developer, implemented a player-centric economy in which players can make real money. The economy is build upon the linden dollars (L$), which players can earn by engaging in various activities in the game. Some activities are quite passive, such as sitting on camping chairs, while others like creating virtual content and trading virtual real estate require real skill.
Some players would rather save time and spend cash for L$, and other players prefer to generate L$ with their in-game activities. The balance between these types of players supports the lindex currency exchange, and provide the liquidity necessary to allow players to purchase L$ for real currency.
Entropia universe
Entropia universe is a good example of a game that allows players to exchange hard currency into real money. Entropia uses a micropayment business model in which players may buy in-game currency (PED — project entropia dollars) with real money. Later, if the user gains more than they can use or decides to leave the game, they can redeem their remaining PED for U.S. Dollars at a fixed exchange rate of 10:1. This means that virtual items acquired within entropia universe have a real cash value, and the company generates income via transaction fees levied during the exchange process.
Like lordmancer II, entropia universe is a free game, but spending money on the in-game currency allows users to purchase items, skills, deeds/shares, and services from other players. Entropia also contains a market where expendable resources (ammunition, probes, guns, finders, extractors) can be purchased directly or other players.
Entropia universe was noted in the guinness world records book in both 2004 and 2008 for the most expensive sale of a virtual world object. In 2009, a virtual space station, a popular destination in the game, sold for $330,000 USD. This was then eclipsed in november 2010 when jon jacobs sold a club named “club neverdie” for $635,000 USD; this property was sold in pieces, the largest of which was sold for $335,000 USD.
According to the mindark’s 2015 earnings report, their 2015 profit was 4 million SEK.
World of warcraft & diablo III
Prior to diablo III, blizzard did not permit any form of real money trading in their games, and the company engaged in long-running and generally-successful campaign to stop character leveling services and gold farmers/sellers in world of warcraft. At the same time that blizzard was working on eliminating external game markets, they also began to experiment with monetization of their their games with in-app purchases like special mounts and realm transfers.
In july of 2011, blizzard announced that the diablo III auction house would include a real money aspect auction house. Only items (and eventually characters) would be available for sale, and blizzard intended for it to operate in tandem with the in-game gold auction house. Players would be able to list items on either service and blizzard charged a flat fee for each item listed (to discourage players from flooding the market with junk items). Transaction fees on successful purchases were also applied. Proceeds from sales on the real money auction house could be spent on blizzard merchandise and games, or withdrawn into actual currency for a small transaction fee paid to blizard and their financial partner.
In late 2011 and early 2012 a lengthy saga ensued as the korean games rating board repeatedly refused to certify diablo III for sale in korea due to inclusion of the real money auction house. Korea strictly regulates all online and offline forms of gambling, and the design of the real money mechanism built into diablo III’s categorizes it as a form of gambling. One quote from a september 2011 korea times article explains the potential problem:
“the issue of gambling, illegal for korean nationals, is a sensitive one, especially after a 2005–06 nationwide scandal over the sea story game machines that first passed the regulatory body inspection but were removed after the police discovered excessively speculative and addictive behavior among the players. Due to this controversy, the watchdog and approval committee was created in the game rating board.
The country’s attitude toward gaming involving cash transactions has irked blizzard’s local staff who are reluctant to deal with the controversy expected with the introduction of the auction house but are forced by headquarters to launch the feature, an industry source familiar with the matter said.”
This prediction proved correct, and when diablo III was submitted to the ratings board in early 2012, there were significant delays. Blizzard submitted a second time with the “cash out” element removed, but was still unable to receive an age rating in korea. Not until diablo III was submitted without any real money auction house at all was the game finally approved for sale, on january 13th 2012.
No blizzard games since 2012 have featured any kind of real money trading.
Cryptocurrency: a possible solution
These examples along with a numerous black markets for game items and currency demonstrate a clear interest from players in real money trading. However, projects that implement various forms of the mechanic meet several difficulties:
· it’s difficult to balance an in-game economy which is connected to an external currency, and often causes developer revenue to be volatile and unpredictable;
· in some regions the mechanics may cause the game to fall into a category of gambling games are regulated differently from other games.
An MMO RPG called lordmancer II claims to be “the first open-world MMORPG on mobile where players can mine cryptocurrency”. Its creator, a russian game studio active games, introduced an ethereum-based cryptocurrency token as the game’s second hard currency. According to active games, this approach solves both problems:
· the game economy is based on a turnover of lord coin, and is regulated through token burn and developer fees levied on each transaction;
· lordmancer II only allows users to withdraw crypto tokens, so officially the game can not be treated as gambling.
A player can purchase lordcoins in one of three possible ways.
On a crypto exchange
After the game’s ICO is finished this october and the game is released, its lordcoin tokens will be available on crypto exchanges. Any player will be able to purchase tokens and move them to their game account.
On the game’s website
Alternatively, a player will be able to purchase lordcoins on the game’s website. This would be convenient to those players not familiar with cryptocurrency world. In this case, the game itself would purchase lordcoins on a crypto exchange and move it to the player’s account. The price will be twice as high, due to additional conversion costs.
In the game
There is another hard currency in lordmancer II. It’s called crystals and it can be purchased for fiat money using standard in-app purchase mechanisms provided by appstores.
A player will be able to exchange crystals for lordcoins, but at a rate four times higher than on a crypto exchange. This is due to even higher costs: only some 30% of a player’s payment will reach active games, of which 25% will be spent on purchasing tokens.
Players are winners
Using this approach, active games studio aims to make its lordmancer II an attractive ecosystem for players wishing to earn fiat money by farming in-game items and by cultivating game characters for sale. Of course, the game itself needs to be good enough to become popular. Will the studio succeed? Only time will tell.
At this time, lordmancer II is in beta-testing in russia, it is available in russian google play.
The studio sold out pre ICO in august and raised 340 ETH. The main ICO round starts on october 23.

What to expect in the path of exile 3.13 update
The highly-anticipated 3.13 update is slated to release on january 15 th of 2021 and you can bet there’s a lot of excitement and gossiping about what’s to come. The only thing players are sure of is that grinding gear games really put their best foot forward to start the newest year right. During the live twitch announcement when the developers were doing the open forum, they stated that the update was actually set to release just before 2020 ends.
So why did grinding gear games decide to delay it? The answer was: cyberpunk 2077. A lot of other games besides path of exile wanted to get away from the release window of cyberpunk 2077 and with good reason. It was the game the people looked forward to the most. After years of delay, the release date was finally set in stone. Who would want to compete with that? Any game developer that decided to put out a game within cyberpunk 2077’s scheduled month to be officially released would surely perish. And just think, path of exile was one of the many games that made this move. But hey, 2021 has now officially started, and GGG has brought lots to the table!

Path of exile currency
Path of exile (POE) is a dark and gothic top-down MMORPG in a horror-themed world, and allows you to fully customize your character according to the way you wish to battle hordes of evil. It may sound like another diablo clone, but it isn't. It can rival AAA productions when it comes to graphics, gameplay, and innovation, as it gives its players so much freedom when it comes to their avatar's play style and build.
Every exile needs orbs in their backpack, as the benefits these little round currency balls provide to your in-game strength and finances can be astounding.
Meet some of our most popular orbs:
The vaal orb is a valuable asset. This orb simply corrupts an item and can be used to corrupt even the mightiest of weapons to offer additional strength and produce extremely powerful results.

What to use poe currency on?
When used for their main purpose, orbs only affect one or two properties of an item, depending on the orb in question. Certain orbs change the rarity. An excellent example of this is the orb of alchemy, which upgrades a regular item into a rare one. Another would be the orb of chance, which, rather than simply upgrading normal gear to the rare tier, upgrades it to a random tier.
Some orbs change a gear’s modifiers like the orb of alteration and augmentation, which respectively rerolls and adds modifiers on magic items. There’s also the chaos orb and exalted orb; they are respective counterparts of the orb of alteration and augmentation for rare-tier gear. On the other hand, if you want the modifiers on your gear but don’t like its values, you should use a divine orb. It rerolls at random all the explicit value modifiers.
If your problem is the sockets on your gear and/or their links, then you’ll need the chromatic orb and the orb of fusing. The former changes the color of gem sockets in gear, whose results depend on the stats being required by the gear. For example, if it requires much strength, then the resulting gear will have a red socket, blue for intelligence, and green for dexterity. The latter, meanwhile, is used to link two gem sockets, allowing players to use support gems on a particular skill gem they like. Also, this helps them save time and effort in finding the same gear with a different socket link.
Last but not the least is the shapers orb. Rather than modify gear, it upgrades the tier of the map it’s used in when you’re the atlas of worlds, which allows the user to get better gear. Although no number of POE exalted orbs can be enough for a player, farming orbs and waiting for the trading process to complete can be tedious.
Items that you can get in the poe 3.13 update
It’s easy to tell that grinding gear games has always put their heart and soul into making every expansion/update for their community, and this one is no exception. The 3.13 update covers a lot of ground in terms of new endgame content, items, skills to learn, and more. The best part is that all of this is for free! Players don’t have to spend a single dime if they want to experience the wonders of path of exile. In the items department, namely, they have a lot in store that anyone can try to get for themselves.
Here are some that might interest buyers:
New gems
Gems are a focal point in path of exile’s gameplay. To date, there are more than 400 gems that you can slot into your item sockets. There are three types of skill gems: active, passive, and vaal skill gems. As if it wasn’t any more obvious, active gems grant active skills to players that equip them. Passive gems, on the other hand, are merely support skill gems that further augment an active gem. Vaal skill gems are those that you don’t see every day but get much use compared to passive and active gems. Vaal skill gems are merely normal gems that can only be found in corrupted areas.
Now that you have a rundown of the usual types of gems in path of exile, we can talk about the two new gems that’ll be released in the 3.13 update. There’s the hydrosphere, an active skill gem, and trinity, a passive skill gem. The hydrosphere lets players summon a huge body of water in the form of spheres that burst and damage enemies upon impact. The trinity gem further increases the elemental penetration for players that have high stats for all three types of elements.
New watchstones
Watchstones are some of the new items that will be introduced in the conquerors of atlas expansion (3.10 update). There are two versions of watchstones that you can collect: the unique ivory version and the quest item version. Quest item watchstones can’t be traded to other players and is used to upgrade maps tiers/add map bases. Unique ivory watchstones have special bonuses that give it that extra oomph to a character’s stats and is a tradeable item. There are already lots of watchstones that you can collect, but grinding gear games decided to add three more: platinum, titanium, and chromium. All of which can be traded. Seeking out the three new watchstones is a good idea if you want to alter your region of choice’s content and reward.
Blackflame
Blackfame is an amethyst ring that centers around the fire and chaos damage theme of path of exile. This accessory is part of the many items that will be released in the echoes of the atlas expansion. The blackflame is the perfect accessory to equip for players that want to increase their chaos resistance and their fire damage at the same time. The 50% reduction for ignite duration on enemies is a handy passive as well.
Hand of the fervent
The hand of the fervent are unique zealot gloves that give a whopping 126% increase to a player’s armor and energy shield. It also increases your maximum health once you equip it. The hand of the fervent’s mechanic, sacrificial zeal, lets players get additional spell physical damage in exchange for mana and sustaining physical damage over time for 4 seconds.

Mmos that allow real money trading
EDIT: sorry I wasn't very specific. This thread is about games that allow you to sell in-game items and currency for money. Not PLEX systems (games that allow you buy items with real world money you can sell in-game). A lot of games have PLEX systems.
PREFACE 1: this topic is NOT about your opinion on such games positive or negative. Please read the OP before posting.
PREFACE 2: this topic is NOT about RMT in games where it explicitly violates the TOS/EULA. This is about games that allow it in some form or another.
So what this topic is about is talking about games where you can RMT without TOS/EULA violations how it was implemented in those games. Let me start.
ENTROPIA UNIVERSE - this game is like the poster child of RMT games. I found it's implementation very interesting but flawed. Real world currency is used to buy the ingame currency. Then almost everything you do in-game costs currency. For instance hunting costs ammo and unless you get pretty lucky or have a very good character you are likely to lose more in ammo then you get in loot. It's like a virtual slot machine with the odds getting slightly better as you level your character. The market in this game is also intensely competitive with everyone trying super hard to make the deals work in their favor so they can make some money. So you could make money from the start playing the market but that is a difficult game to play.
The upside that I did like about this game is has no monthly premium. So say you pay 15$ into the game at the beginning of the month and then your grandmother dies and you spend the rest of the month arranging and attending the funeral. When you get back you've lost nothing and pick up where you left off. That at least, I found pretty cool. I also liked that there are actually passive income sources in-game through the form of land deeds that give you a portion of the value of all the loot hunted in the area where you hold the deed. Pretty sweet.
Another other cool part is in-game currency can be cashed out for hard cash at any time. A slight fee does apply but that's always there.
WURM ONLINE - wurm's currency is also purchased through cash. While it has no option to cash out they openly allow you to post things like "selling silver 1EU per silver" in the in-game trade chat and on the market section of the forums.
The stark difference between wurm and entropia is that wurm has a lot of things you can do at no cost to earn in-game silver. A halfway savvy player can turn a profit even if it isn't a very big one, and the savviest players can turn a pretty decent profit if you are talking in terms of a hobby/side-income and not your primary income source.
One downside is that is a subscription based game with the free to play option generating very little potential for notable profits. So you'll have to be at least semi-active to even break even.
STAR CITIZEN - while RMT is a bit more underground in this game they do not crack down on RMT happening on reddit known as the "grey market." it's not a TOS/EULA violation persay, it's just not openly encouraged like in the other two titles I listed, and it's totally forbidden on their main forums.
The huge advantage of star citizen is that it's market is hot. I've personally made 4 figures trading on the grey market though admittedly this was because I bought up some very rare limited edition ships early on and sold them at a premium a couple years down the road. The market has cooled down a bit since then.
It will be interesting to see what they tolerate in the grey market post game release. If the grey market allows in-game currency trading post game release it will be a very interesting title for those looking to make a bit of side income.

Animal crossing: new horizons' real money trade violates the terms of service, nintendo points out
A digital economy has sprung up around animal crossing: new horizons. Japanese website J-cast reports that the characters dom (pictured), judy, and marshal are being sold for 5,000 yen ($46.59) on twitter in japan in the real money trade.
The character jack, J-cast adds, is going for 8,000 yen ($74.49).
Nintendo has strictly defined rules about monetization. As clearly stated on the network services guidelines, nintendo writes , “you may monetize your videos and channels using the monetization methods separately specified by nintendo. Other forms of monetization of our intellectual property for commercial purposes are not permitted.”
J-cast reached out nintendo regarding the real-money trade of animal crossing: new horizons characters. “we are aware of the violation of our terms of use,” nintendo replied. Nintendo added that it is currently c onsidering what steps should be taken regarding the sale of new horizons characters.

Nintendo is saying: you own the game, but you don’t “own” the game; you do a lot of work in the game, but it’s not real work worth real money; only I can be remunerated for my work..
Which is bs. I’m sure that doing this protects nintendo from some laws somewhere, but those laws are also bs. At this point the game exists outside of nintendo’s hands, it has to create all these user agreements to try and control it, but games in general should have more autonomy from the corporate control of their creators . Players need to demand more control over what they spend so much time and effort on.
Is it legal to sell game items for real money?
Me and my friends play wow, lol etc(online games)..
Is it legal to sell in-game items for real money? I know it's a small case and probably won't be chased after but in terms of law, is it perfectly legal?
In the games terms and conditions it states that it will result in a ban of the account. Can game developers sue me for providing the service or is the ban of the account their limit?

The answer to this question would also heavily depend on which country the transaction is occurring.
Supreme court of south korea ruled in july 2009 that exchanging virtual currency for real world currency is legal, even though doing so was against the game's terms of service. Consequently, players cannot be held legally liable for trading their virtual currency into real money if the game is being serviced in south korea. This however, does not mean the company cannot suspend your account for doing so. Likely, other countries have different laws about this type of transaction, which you should look into.
Not a lawyer and not a heavily researched answer.
You do not own the game, rather, you own a license to use the game software. The license will specify the ways in which they allow you to use the software, and they will typically reserve all other rights. This most likely includes the right to profit from game in any way. Your selling of in-game items would, in that case, be a violation of the license and they would have recourse according to the license and/or the law.
If they can show you profited from their property, they are probably entitled to compensation. There may also be relevant statutory damages for violation of the license, although I am less sure about that. I am way out on a limb here but by violating the license terms you might be engaging in copyright violation (since you are only authorized to have and use the copy if you abide by the terms) and therefore you might be on the hook that way; see e.G. Https://www.Law.Cornell.Edu/uscode/text/17/504 for an idea of what you might be looking at if they decide it's worth their effort to pursue.
It depends on the user agreement of the game.
For example, in league, you may not sell your account and trading (e.G through mutual gifting of skins) is forbidden iirc.
In wow, dota and CSGO you are allowed to market in game items.
It 100% depends on the EULA of the game.
Not really. It depends on the terms and conditions, game policy placed by the developer and signed by the user i.E you on the game. We all sign license and agreement at installation don't we
