Ft. Downing trading co. Is a home based historical clothing business for men and women, and now children! We do our own sewing using authentic patterns of 18th century life, with special emphasis to the french & indian war and the revolutionary war time periods.

We take great pride in our work and take extra steps to assure that we turn out a quality garment. Our fabrics are selected to reflect period-correct styles and colors, and ALL fabrics are prewashed and dryed using the hottest settings possible. This insures you that your garment will not shrink the first time you laundry it. We double and triple stitch the stress points on all of our clothing.

Although we do maintain a basic stock supply, each order is handled individually . When you place an order with us, we attempt to customize it to your own specific needs and measurements. The care we take with your garment makes each piece a one-of-a-kind article. The time it takes to complete your order depends on the complexity of the garment and our backlog of orders.

The grandest fort on the upper missouri river

Between 1828 and 1867, fort union was the most important fur trade post on the upper missouri river. Here, the assiniboine and six other northern plains indian tribes exchanged buffalo robes and smaller furs for goods from around the world, including cloth, guns, blankets, and beads. Bent’s old fort national historic site, la junta

If you're traveling on the santa fe trail national scenic and historic byway, don't miss one of colorado's must-see attractions: a stop at bent's old fort national historic site near la junta. Built in 1833 by william and charles bent and their partner, ceran st. Vrain, the original trading post was a conduit of commerce for people living on the plains of the region. It had enough sleeping rooms to house up to 200 people, and it quickly became a center for cultural interaction between american settlers, mexicans and native americans. In fact, the bent brothers made great strides to maintain good relations with the arapaho, kiowa and cheyenne indians who hunted on the land around the fort.

In 1835, william bent married mis-stan-sta or owl woman, the daughter of white thunder, a holy man among the cheyenne people. Their marriage helped bridge the two cultures and maintain peace between them.

Today, you can stroll among the extensive network of rooms and corridors and visualize what life was like in an old trading post. The fort was reconstructed in 1976 and is made of adobe, an efficient building material used in the dry climates of the west. Employees at the fort dress in period clothing and encourage you to ask any questions you might have about the area's past.

Fort uncompahgre, delta

Watch ute indian dancers clad in buckskin and other traditional garb engage in traditional dances in delta. Every summer, fort uncompahgre — a military fort turned living museum — hosts thunder mountain lives tonight. In addition to the dances, interpreters are on hand to demonstrate and explain the how and why of pioneer fur trapping, hide tanning and even arrowhead making. Throughout the rest of the year, visitors are encouraged to take a self-guided tour to learn about fort life and the lucrative and dangerous business of fur trapping. Before its life as an interpretive museum, fort uncompahgre stood as a staging point for united states soldiers who stood against american indian attacks on white fur trappers in western colorado.

El pueblo fort, pueblo

See the lives and livelihoods of the white settlers and american indians of the area chronicled at the el pueblo history museum in pueblo. Once a fort, a great amount of goods came through el pueblo’s doors in the mid to late 1800s. It served as a sanctuary for a number of well-to-do traders who built their incomes by trading with the ute and apache indians in the area. The demise of the fort came at the hands of the same tribes with which they traded. Angered over the rampant spread of disease and encroachment on their land, a band of ute and apache warriors stormed the fort and captured or killed many of its inhabitants. The fort was abandoned shortly thereafter and, years later, other settlers built over it. Now, thanks largely to the efforts of a local historian, parts of the old fort have been reclaimed from the earth, and a history museum sits near the fort’s original site, featuring painstakingly replicated sections of the original fort.

Fort vasquez, platteville

Learn the inner workings of the fort vasquez fur-trading post found just north of denver, near greeley in platteville. Louis vasquez (the fort’s namesake) was a trapper in the early 1880s who made his living bartering furs from the cheyenne and arapaho indians in return for food and shot. A reconstructed fort stands almost exactly where the original was built. And now, you can tour the replica fort, as well as the museum and visitor center, also located on site. Unlike other trading posts of the era, fort vasquez did not succumb to american indian attack or fold due to extreme hardship. Instead, it was abandoned in the late 19th century due to the declining demand for its main commodity — beaver pelt.

Fort garland, town of fort garland

In the 1800s, increased settler protection became a priority. Fort garland, built in 1858, was constructed in direct response to this need. With an infantry and cavalry unit — each with up to 100 soldiers — it protected new settlers in the san luis valley against resistant ute indians, who had made their traditional home there for centuries. Over its life, the fort drew distinguished soldiers, including storied frontiersman kit carson. Even fabled buffalo soldiers (black troops assigned to the western frontier after the civil war) were stationed there during the fort’s tenure. A congressional medal of honor recipient was among the ranks of the black soldiers stationed there. Today, it has been rebuilt as a living museum. Along with learning the history of this military fort, you can also view hispanic folk art on display. And don't forget to take a self-guided tour through one of the most interesting parts of the fort: the commandant’s quarters, a replica of the room used by kit carson.

Fort morgan, town of fort morgan

Constructed in 1865 a half mile from the south platte river on a strategic tract of land know as morgan flats, fort morgan gave a commanding view of the entire river valley, as well as the north side of the south platte river. As the only army presence between julesburg to the east and the populated regions of the rockies in the west, it was the united states’ largest organized armed presence for miles. While the fort no longer stands, you can tour the fort morgan museum for military- and area-related history.

Fort hall, idaho – trading on the snake river

The fort hall fur trading post in idaho was particularly noteworthy in the history of the fur trade, transportation-communications, and overland emigration. The fur trading post, however, also had associations with military-indian affairs.

The post was founded by nathaniel J. Wyeth, an opportunistic new england businessman who dreamed of exploiting the natural resources of the oregon country. After an exploratory expedition in 1832-33, he returned the next year. Near the confluence of the snake and portneuf rivers in southeastern idaho, he built fort hall, a stockade of cottonwood logs with two blockhouses. But he found he could not compete with the powerful hudson’s bay company , which the same year built a rival post, old fort boise (snake fort), idaho, 260 miles to the west at the confluence of the boise and snake rivers.

Around 1837 the hudson’s bay company purchased fort hall from wyeth, reconstructed it with adobe, and enlarged it considerably. It became a center of the rocky mountain fur trade and was such a lucrative enterprise that the hudson’s bay company maintained it until approximately 1856, or a decade after the united states acquired full rights to the oregon country from great britain. The post served an acculturative role among the intermountain tribes similar to that of fort union trading post, north dakota, fort laramie, wyoming, and bent’s old fort, colorado among the plains indians.

Occupying a prime location only 50 miles northeast of the point where the oregon-california trail forked to oregon and california, fort hall in 1842-43 became a major way station and supply point for emigrants and travelers. Dr. Marcus whitman, reverend henry H. Spalding, and father pierre jean de smet stopped there at various times. So did the explorer john C. Fremont in 1843, while probing the far west. He recommended the establishment of a permanent military post at the spot to supply emigrants and protect them from the indians. The army never acted on his proposal, but troops later frequently camped at the fur post site or its vicinity.

In 1849 the loring expedition of mounted riflemen from fort leavenworth, kansas, establishing posts along the oregon trail, founded cantonment loring, often incorrectly known as fort hall, about three miles up the snake river from the fur trading post. Loring left two companies to erect a permanent post and proceeded to fort vancouver, washington. A shortage of forage and provisions, however, caused the abandonment of the cantonment the next may.

A decline in trade and increasing indian hostilities led the hudson’s bay company to discontinue operations at fort hall sometime around 1856. For a few years, itinerant traders sometimes lived in the crumbling buildings. In 1859-60 and 1863 regulars and oregon volunteers camped there while patrolling the trail. A flood in the latter year destroyed much of the fort. During the 1860s and 1870s overland stage and mail lines used the site, a key road junction, as a base. So, too, did freighters hauling supplies to mining camps in oregon, washington, idaho, and montana.

In 1865-66, slightly to the north of the fort hall site, oregon volunteers protecting the oregon trail maintained temporary camp lander. For materials, they may have utilized log and adobe scraps from the old fort. Federal troops returned to the area in 1870, but they established a new post, also named fort hall, 25 miles to the northeast.

The fur post site is on the fort hall indian reservation. A small monument stands about 50 yards from the edge of the american falls reservoir. The only surface remains are low earth mounds outlining the fort’s walls. Except for the waters of the reservoir, the natural scene is relatively unchanged. The sites of the nearby posts of cantonment loring and camp lander, often confused with fort hall, have not been ascertained.

The old fort site is located in bannock county, idaho, just off an unimproved road, about 11 miles west of the town of fort hall.

Though there are no remains at the original site of fort hall, a replica fort was built in pocatello, idaho in the 1960s. The fort hall replica is a reproduction of the original hudson’s bay fort, based on plans obtained from the hudson’s bay company and extensive research based on early descriptions of the fort from persons who lived at or visited fort hall.

The fur trade

Native americans traded along the waterways of present-day minnesota and across the great lakes for centuries before the arrival of europeans in the mid-1600s. For nearly 200 years afterward, european american traders exchanged manufactured goods with native people for valuable furs.

The ojibwe and dakota held powerful positions, prompting both the french and british to actively court their military and trade allegiance. Trade with native americans was so critical to the french and british that many european americans working in the fur trade adopted native protocols. The ojibwe were particularly influential, which led many french and british people to favor ojibwe customs of bartering, cooperative diplomacy, meeting in councils, and the use of pipes.

Following the american revolution, the US competed fiercely with great britain for control of the north american fur trade. After the war of 1812 there were three main parties involved in the upper mississippi fur trade: native americans (primarily the dakota and ojibwe), the fur trading companies, and the US government. These parties worked together and each had something to gain from a stable trading environment. Both fort snelling and the indian agency were established by the US government at the junction of the mississippi and minnesota rivers to control and maintain the stability of the region's fur trade.

By 1823, the american fur company controlled the fur trade across much of present-day minnesota. The company’s headquarters was at the confluence of the minnesota and mississippi rivers, at a post called new hope, or more commonly called st. Peters. Today it is called mendota, derived from the word bdote. The post was managed by alexis bailly, who began running a series of trading posts that extended up the minnesota and mississippi rivers. Henry hastings sibley, who took bailly’s place in 1834, ran the western outfit of the american fur company and was responsible for trade with the dakota.

The dakota and ojibwe were the primary trappers of fur-bearing animals in the northwest territory. They harvested a wide variety of furs (beaver being the most valuable) in the region's woodlands and waterways. In exchange for these furs, french, british, and US traders provided goods such as blankets, firearms and ammunition, cloth, metal tools, and brass kettles. The dakota and ojibwe had existed for thousands of years using tools made from readily available materials, but by the 1800s trade goods had become a part of daily life for many native communities. Some dakota and ojibwe communities became dependent on trade goods for a certain level of prosperity and efficiency in their everyday lives. The fur trade had a tremendous effect on dakota and ojibwe cultural practices and influenced US-native economic and political relations in the 19th century, including treaty negotiations.

Voyageurs ("travelers" in french) were men hired to work for the fur trade companies to transport trade goods throughout the vast territory to rendezvous posts. At the rendezvous points, these goods were exchanged for furs, which were then sent to larger cities for shipment to the east coast. Many traders and voyageurs married native american women and were integrated into their native kinship networks, often trading exclusively within their particular community. As a result of generations of intermarriage, large communities of individuals of diverse heritage developed, often called "mixed-bloods" or “half-breeds” during the period, and many of these individuals maintained ties to both the fur trade and native communities.

George bonga, the son of a former slave and an ojibwe woman, married an ojibwe woman and was active in the fur trade during the first half of the 1800s. Bonga was educated in montreal and was well-known for his physical stature and strength. Often sought out for his skills as an interpreter, bonga could speak french, english, and ojibwe. The bonga family is just one example of the diversity and cultural exchange that resulted from the fur trade in the northwest territory.

Slavery also played a part in the fur trade, as some traders and fur company employees (including jean baptiste faribault and hypolite dupuis) utilized the labor of enslaved people. There is speculation as to whether henry hastings sibley enslaved someone at his trading post, because it is unclear as to whether or not joe robinson, his cook, was a free man. In some cases these enslaved people were freed by their masters, but often they remained part of the trade business.

By the 1840s the fur trade had declined dramatically in the minnesota region, partially due to changes in fashion tastes, the availability of less-expensive materials for hat-making, and because the US government reduced dakota and ojibwe hunting grounds through treaties. For many dakota and ojibwe people, who had by this time become increasingly dependent on the trade, exchanging land in order to pay off debts claimed by traders became a matter of survival.
